Warrior (2011)

MMA drama with Tom Hardy and Aussie, Joel Edgerton as estranged brothers with their own demons/problems that enter a tournament where the last man standing wins $5 million which would help out Edgerton’s character/family as the bank is on the verge of taking his house.

Yeah, really liked this. Tom Hardy is excellent. His scenes with Nick Nolte, ( who has deservedly been nominated for an Oscar in this role and plays a former alcoholic father trying to re-connect and fix his relationships with his sons) are powerful. The fights are well done and I haven’t seen Jennifer Morris since she left House, but she does enough as the worried wife of Edgerton.

Comparable to The Fighter, which is probably fair enough as its more of a drama, that just happens to have fighting (Boxing/MMA) in it. And as much as I love Christian Bale and The Fighter, I’d rate Warrior even higher.

While the film is certainly “Hollywood” in some parts, the performances of the main cast (Nolte/Hardy in particular) and the fight sequences make this film an absolute treat. And the best thing is you don’t have to be a lover of MMA to enjoy it.

One of the best films I’ve seen in some time..

Top 5: Movies With “Man-Lessons” for Valentines Day

We could have made a list of the new films that could be Valentine’s Day viewing material such as ‘Footloose’ (re-make), ‘One Day,’ ‘Crazy Stupid Love,’ ‘What’s You Number?’ or even movies that scare and require comfort cuddles like ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ but we thought we would put a different spin on picking your films for “love day.”

There are definitely movies that I agree guys should just suck it up and sit through, especially once a year when Valentine’s Day comes around. There are also a few that are half-way points for equal gender entertainment, however here are my picks for films that men should enjoy or at least take a “man lesson” away from.

5) The Karate Kid & The Karate Kid 2

Who doesn’t want to win a Karate tournament infront of their girlfriend? Seriously this film will have your man proving he’s a tough-guy to any bullies no matter how scrawny he might be.

He’s back but forget Elizabeth Shue. This is a new country with new villans and a lovely lady’s honour to protect. Again another end-title song which re-enforces the man-lessons learnt.

4) Jerry Macquire

There is sports talk and heaps of American football to keep men distracted from the love story plot. But the lesson for men here is how to get your girl back and it should involve making a speech in front of all her friends.

3) Titanic

The man-lesson here is, don’t be one of the rich cowards taking up room in the lifeboats. Just jump in the water and let your loved one take the floatation device. And don’t repeatedly ask if she thinks there is enough room for you on there.

2) Armageddon

Working the oil rig, dating your boss’ daughter, Liv Tyler, being asked by NASA to save the earth… I’m sure there’s plenty there to keep him thinking that it’s one of “his movie picks.”

Man-Lesson: Make sure your girl won’t be annoyed with if it is you that returns from the mission.

1) Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Man-Pros: It has an American Robin Hood with a mullet. They’re building guerilla warfare traps in the woods. They use weapons.

Man-Lessons: We’ll let Bryan Adams handle the message to men in this one.

Honourable Mentions: Gladiator & Braveheart

These epic films can be enjoyed by all with “historic” characters and lots of action. They even manage to pull on some heart-strings.

Man-Lesson: The worst thing any enemy can do is mess with love.

SAG Awards – winners announced!

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this week with a few eyebrows being raised ahead of the Oscars.

After picking up the Golden Globe for Best Male Actor, George Clooney missed out on a SAG Award to Jean Dujardin for The Artist. (Also of note, Leo was nominated in this category for J. Edgar but missed out on a nomination for the Oscar).

Also a little surprising was Viola Davis‘ win for The Help for Female Actor in a Leading Role ahead of Meryl Streep, who took out the Golden Globe Award.

For TV, no real surprises with Modern Family and Boardwalk Empire taking out awards. And Alec Baldwin yet again won Male Actor in a Comedy Series. When will his run end??

Yes, Oscars time will be very interesting…

2012 Oscar Nominations Announced!

It’s that time of year to dust off the old tux again, prepare the speeches and air kiss celebrities – the Oscars are upon us!

In years passed, predicting the nominations in each categories have been pretty straight forward. This year however, the Academy has served up plenty of surprises.

Leading the charge is Hugo with 11 nominations, closely followed by the silent film The Artist with 10.

The surprises are many. Demian Bichir snuck into the Best Male Actor category, ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ryan Gosling. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo received 5 nominations but not Best Picture, for which Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close did.

It will be a very interesting awards ceremony come late February. Until then, here’s the full list of nominees.
